I just watched a report on a suicide bombing at the airport in Kabul, and I cant help but reflect on the total disregard for human life. This is a firsthand look at chaos and disorder. A breakdown of society and its rules and norms is on display. It is a snapshot of what is possible in any country given the right set of circumstances. Once society is allowed to decay, it is difficult to recover. Imagine if you left your home today and had to fear for your wellbeing just for being outside. What if you no longer had freedom of movement in your city or town. A trip for groceries could be life ending.
This is the very reason law and order is important. Law and order is important because it informs us of what is accepted in our society and how we choose to interact. A society that wishes to maintain peace, and be one that is relatively problem free must have rules and norms. Our laws inform us how disputes will be addressed and resolved.
We have the luxury to live where we do. You can travel the nation without travel documents. You are free to pursue interests. You can go to a store or event with relative safety.
The safety in our Country is sometimes shattered and we are shocked. We should be. It’s not acceptable. This however is the exception and not the norm. We have rules and offenders are held accountable. This is why law and order is important.
We are at a critical juncture in the US. Last year we saw chaos and disorder firsthand. What I will call a failed experiment happened in downtown Seattle. This area had rampant criminal acts occur and a total disregard for the rule of law. We must not allow the United States to away from law and order. We must not return to that “experiment.”
Our society is a representative one with laws and rules, including a legal process to address change. It must be maintained. There is no place in a peaceful country for what happened last year in many cities to be allowed.
What does this have to do with Lodi. The answer is hopefully it has nothing to do our home. A home where that kind of chaos is not permitted. Lodi is a great place to live and work. We have a society of law and order. You have representatives that work for the betterment of the City. We have a Fire Department and an EMS service. You have a Police Department. The Police Department exists because of your consent. It exists solely to serve its citizens and visitors to the City. It maintains order and preserves the free movement of its people. The Police Department is the gatekeeper of our rules and norms.
Human life, free movement and law and order is respected here. This is why law and order is important. Please do not turn away from the horrors’ we see in other parts of the world but reflect on why what we have is important and should be nurtured.
I am thankful to be a part of this community and its values. I’m thankful law and order exists here and we support it.
