Library and Ice Age Trail Team Up

The Lodi Valley Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance has been offering Tyke Hikes – short hikes for preschool children accompanied by an adult – for the past few years. In this time of COVID-19 we haven’t been able to have these hikes but we still want to encourage young children to go hiking… so we’ve come up with a fun idea!
The Lodi Valley Chapter is partnering with the Lodi Public Library for a special project that we’re calling “Create your own hiking stick.”  On August 1 from 10-Noon, come to the outside door of the Program Room of the Library, which is on the side of the building in the parking lot. We will be providing preschool children (tykes) with a hiking stick “kit.” Each kit will include one smooth length of branch (peeled by the local Scout group….thank you, Scouts!) as well as a bag of supplies to get children started decorating their hiking stick (beads, a length of leather cord, etc.). Children will then be able to work with their adult/s to create their hiking stick at home. We will invite you to take a picture of the child with his/her hiking stick and send it to us so that we can post it on the Chapter’s and Library’s websites.  At some point when it is safe to resume Tyke Hikes we will be sending a special invitation to those who created a hiking stick to bring their stick on a Tyke Hike.
We have a limited number of hiking stick kits (50). Each child must be accompanied by an adult. Masks are required in the building, but if you do not have a mask we can bring the kit to you at the door or give you free masks. We also have plenty of hand sanitizer.
This project is being done as part of the Lodi Valley Chapter’s Art on the Trail event, which takes place for the entire month of August. To learn more, go to www.ArtontheIceAgeTrail.org or find us on Facebook at artonthetraillodi.
We look forward to seeing you on August 1st!
