The Wisconsin DNR has announced the closing of the 25-foot pistol range at their Columbia County range in Poynette. An inspection of the backstop at this range (and another at Yellowstone Lake) showed significant degradation.
Invoking s. NR 45.04(1)(b) which grants authority to close public spaces ” for the purpose of protecting public health, safety and welfare”. The degradation of the backstop at the Columbia County range was determined to be severe enough to pose a danger to those using the pistol range.
The 25-foot pistol ranges are expected to be closed through the winter. As part of the repairs, the DNR may look at design changes and/or new rules for use of the facilities.
